pH
Whether water is acidic or alkaline. It affects taste and can corrode pipes.

Total Dissolved Solids
How much dissolved salt and minerals the water carries. High levels taste salty or bitter.

Fluoride
A little protects teeth, but too much stains them and weakens bones. A known problem in some groundwater.

Iron (Fe)
Gives water a reddish colour and metallic taste, and stains clothes and taps.

Escherichia coli
A sign that sewage or animal waste has reached the water. Water with E. coli is unsafe to drink untreated.
